Aftercare for Dental Implants
Generally, the success rate of dental implants by bone and gum tissue is excellent, however, a few implants can fail, often due to improper care. Additionally, the prostheses that have been placed over the implants are subject to wear and/or breakage, as with any restorative material. Certain conditions that may occur require immediate attention of the Doctor. Please contact us if any of the following conditions occur:
- Feeling of looseness
- Peculiar clicking or metallic snap while eating
- Breaking a piece of the prosthesis
- Redness in the gum tissue around the implant
- Feeling of the bite being different
- Pain on or near site of restoration
Long-Term Care for Implants
We have done our best to provide you with the highest quality service available. The continuing success of the implant and prosthesis is up to the patient. Patients with a recent implant restoration should be sure to attend all follow-up appointments and all regular exams and necessary cleanings.
For patients who require special maintenance on their dental implant, the Doctor may recommend using one or more of the following before going to bed:
- Floss
- Bridge cleaner
- Toothbrush
- WaterPik or other mechanical toothbrush
- Peridex
It is important for patients to maintain thorough cleaning of the implant prosthesis daily, otherwise it will compromise the longevity of the restoration significantly. We expect years of service from this procedure. However, over a number of years, patients will naturally and gradually wear out the prosthesis portion.
